What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release (MFR) is an advanced form of manual therapy that is safe, natural, and extremely effective in the treatment of acute and chronic pain and for overall health. Myofascial Release uses sustained, hands-on pressure into areas of pain or tension to release restrictions in the fascia (connective tissue). By releasing these restrictions, the body begins to restore to its proper function so that the individual can return to a pain free, active lifestyle. In Myofascial Release we find the symptom, but look elsewhere for the cause. A skilled MFR therapist will look at and treat the entire body through postural assessment and by feeling for restrictions in the tissue. The John Barnes Approach to MFR never forces the body to release. Once a restriction is found, the therapist will engage the barrier with enough stretch to slacken the tissue and then will hold for a minimum of 90-120 seconds. The prolonged hold will begin to release the collagen barriers of the tissue for lasting pain relief.
What are Fascial Restrictions?
Fascia is the connective tissue that is spread three-dimensionally throughout our entire body, head to toe. The fascial system is similar in appearance to a spider's web or sweater. It is highly dense and interwoven throughout every structure and cell of our body; muscle, bone, nerve, organs, including our heart, lungs, brain, and spinal cord. Healthy fascia is relaxed and fluid-like with the ability to stretch freely working seemlessly with every other system of the body. However, when we experience physical/emotional trauma, scarring or inflammation from injury or even poor posture, the fascia loses its fluidity. Without proper release, it can become tight and even calcified, much like living in a straight jacktet, causing pain and dysfunction throughout the entire body. Fascial restrictions have the capability of putting up to 2,000 pounds per square inch of pressure on the body.
